Re: Vietnam
Agree Hanoi is great. Saigon is now like many other big city in asia (certainly in the centre of it anyway)

Cu Chi tunnels are worth it though. As is Halong Bay and Hue is great if you like the Citadel and its part in the Tet offensive during Vietnam war etc. (Or the American war as Vietnamese call it!)

"I ain't seen nothing since I stepped on that landmine in Viet Cong back in 72. It was rough, very painful....I was in Sang Bang, Dang Gong. I was all over the place, baby, a lot of places, a lot of places.... I was with the Green Berets, Special Unit Battalions, Commando Airborne Tactics, Specialist Tactics Unit Battalion. Yeah, it was real hush hush. I was Agent Orange...Special Agent Orange, that was me

I drove all the way to the northern tip of Thailand in the hope that I could cruise up the Mekong to China, but sadly it wasn’t possible. I enjoyed lingering by the Mekong though. If I was going to Vietnam I’d probably include a cruise on it.

Oh also, from Danang I did a day trip to a place called Mui Ne which was the historical religious centre of the Vietnamese and had been for 1000's of years. Way way into the jungle about two hour drive. But worth it. The yanks found out about it and sent military in and slaughtered all the religious folk that loved there and then they bombed the shot out of it.... Which was nice of them. But due to its size a lot of it stayed safe. Seriously good day out if you like that sort of thing. Was like being on an India Jones film-set but real.

Plus, so deep into jungle all around it are signs to warn you of mines which they laid to stop the yanks getting in. And you are told at the start they are live so if you go beyond then you do so at your own risk.

Re: Vietnam
Hoi An is a must imo. Beautiful place. And some top draw restaurants.

Nah Trang is great for beach and nightlife. It's basically like the Spanish Costa but in Vietnam. Some excellent bars.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a must. Got all the signts in the day and good nightlife. And from there you can do the cross to Cambodia (we did two day trip) and day trip to Cu Chi tunnels. Can go down them and there is a shooting range with ANY gun available. I shot an M-60 helicopter gun which was memorable.

Danang is also really nice. Great food and bars.

Hanoi is buzzing. Great bars and restaurants. All the sights and feels much more communist (obviously). Loads of stuff to do; theatres, cinemas, shops you name it. But from Hanoi (if you have time) you MUST go to Halong Bay. From there you can do a boat trip right out into the Gulf of Tonkin which is basically like the film set from Pirates of the Caribbean and KIng Kong rolled into one. You can do overnights or longer (we did 3 nights) and it was one of the best things we've done. It is a MASSIVE tourist trap and is being absolutely rinsed but it is still well worth it.

Re: Vietnam
I first visited there in 1998, been a few times since.

Has changed massively, there were no ATM's, traffic lights and fast food places.

Lost a lot of it's charm, but still a great place to visit.

Hoi An is a lovely place, beautiful old town with 2 nearby beaches.

Nha Trang used to be nice not very nice now.

I had to leave that prison PDQ as it was very uncomfortable , but (sort of) worth seeing .

The longest cable car ride over water (10km or 6 miles in old money) is a 20 min drive away .

Well worth seeing .

The boat ride from HCMC to the jungle is well worth the 60 odd quid .

You get a tour with lunch and can fire all sorts of guns .

Bars are in a place called locally backpacker st . All have price lists outside so look before you go in as one bar will charge 50p a beer and the one next door is 2.50.

Only did pho quoc and the jungle tour , can’t help with much else .

March last year I was there .

One of my mates went a few months ago. Said phu coq prison was an eye opener. Had displays with mannequins acting out the torture that happened there.
Always wanted to go there, wouldn’t mind doing what they did in that top gear special.

I remember a traffic jam of scooters. From a distance, it sounded like a beehive.
The traffic was the worst thing about the place, but it was also part of the experience.
